Kidnapped Oyo Pupils, Teachers Regain Freedom After Nearly Two Months in Captivity

The pupils and teachers abducted by gunmen from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom after spending nearly two months in captivity.

The victims were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, when armed assailants attacked Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School in the Esiele and Yawota communities, abducting 39 pupils and seven teachers. One teacher was reportedly killed during the incident, which sparked nationwide outrage and forced the closure of public schools across Oyo State following an indefinite strike by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).

Their release brings an end to weeks of anxiety for families, residents and education stakeholders who had repeatedly called on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify rescue efforts. The abduction also triggered protests and renewed concerns over the growing insecurity affecting schools in the country.

The Oyo State Government is expected to provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the victims’ release. Earlier, the government had dismissed reports suggesting that ransom was paid to secure their freedom.
