Kevin Dotson pays Rams lineman big compliment: 'He's literally QB2'

· · 2 min read

The Los Angeles Rams are a team that’s rich with leaders and intelligent players. Whether it’s on offense or defense, there’s no lack of high-character players in their building.

Coleman Shelton certainly falls under that category as the team’s starting center, elevating the play of the entire offensive line after he returned to Los Angeles as a free agent last year.

Kevin Dotson put into perspective just how important he is to the offensive line, paying Shelton a major compliment by saying “he’s literally QB2” when it comes to calling plays and getting the offense set.

“He’s pivotal to the whole offensive line,” Dotson said of Shelton on Tuesday. “He’s literally QB2 in our minds when it comes to play calling and stuff like that. Whatever he says goes. I don’t care if he told me to do a backflip and go right. I’m going to do a backflip and go right because he’s put that work in. He’s put that dedication in, watching the tape, being in there with the quarterbacks to know what the quarterbacks are thinking, what ‘Nine’ (Matthew Stafford) wants this week. So we trust him with our whole hearts that he’s going to get the job done and he’s really meticulous in the way he likes to run so we like that.”

Shelton left in free agency after the 2023 season, signing a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears. He returned to Los Angeles after one season in the Windy City, replacing Beaux Limmer as the Rams’ starting center in 2025.

He’s by no means a perfect lineman but his intelligence and run-blocking ability are two traits that make him a quality starter for the Rams.

The connection between a quarterback and his center is an important one, and there’s no doubt Stafford and Shelton have developed excellent chemistry during their time together as starters.
