Kentucky Wildcat News: SEC tables controversial transfer rule and adopts new player contract rules
Good morning, BBN!
The party is still going on as we are all still celebrating the big win over LSU this weekend at Kroger Field. Will Stein is crushing it in his first season, and has done so by building out his roster through the transfer portal.
Luckily, the SEC has decided to table one of the worst rules that could possibly be applied to the portal for teams in the conference.
Pete Nakos of On3 reported on Monday that the SEC is currently tabling an intra-conference transfer rule that would require the player to sit out a year before playing at that school.
SEC presidents have tabled the possibility of restoring the transfer policy that requires intraconference athletes to sit out a year before playing for another SEC school, sources told @On3. https://t.co/OJjAyRfevvhttps://t.co/nGgr2y27bX

Back in 2021, the SEC voted to allow immediate eligibility to players who transfer within the conference, but with the Protect College Sports Act in Congress proposing a very similar policy, it is not shocking to see these conversations start to happen inside conferences as they look to hold conference teams accountable to rules themselves.
The SEC has also adopted a template for league-wide player contracts. These would be partially tailored to the school, as well as to the wording set by the SEC itself.
Here’s more on the new policy from CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello:
The SEC joins the Big Ten as the second power conference to adopt standardized athlete contracts. Schools can share up to $21.6 million in revenue directly with athletes this academic year, the second year of the 10-year window under the House v. NCAA settlement. Players received nearly $1.8 billion in direct revenue-share payments during the 2025-26 school year, according to the College Sports Commission.
The SEC’s new NIL contract includes customizable sections, sources said, but CBS Sports was not given specifics.
The Big Ten drafted a standardized memorandum of understanding for its schools before the House v. NCAA settlement took effect in July 2025. The template allowed schools to tweak and customize the deals.
The last few years have been the Wild West, but it has done the one thing we all longed for in college sports. Parody. Long gone are the days of the same four schools just beating down everyone; look at Indiana last year. That doesn’t happen with any type of transfer restrictions, and it is good to see the SEC decide to table it for now.
As for the new standardized NIL contracts, this is another sign that the SEC is moving toward self-governance and isn’t banking on the Protect College Sports Act to pass and bring more guardrails to NIL.
Time will tell what changes pop up in college sports, but it is obvious these conferences are trying to find answers themselves if the bill in Congress doesn’t pass.
