Kebbi gov constitutes committee to examine primary school teachers’ salary grievances

Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has announced plans to constitute a committee to review salary-related concerns raised by primary school teachers across the state.

The governor made the disclosure during a meeting with teachers, officials of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, education managers, local government chairmen and other stakeholders in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday.

According to him, the committee will examine complaints relating to the implementation of the new minimum wage and other salary adjustments affecting primary school teachers.

Idris said the committee would be headed by a competent professional and is expected to submit its report within one month.

“As a teacher and former labour leader, I understand the concerns of teachers, and I will never ignore issues affecting their welfare. We shall set up a committee to review all complaints and submit its report within 30 days,” he said.

The governor said the review was aimed at addressing issues raised by teachers and finding appropriate solutions to salary-related grievances.

During the meeting, he directed local government chairmen to provide details of their councils’ allocations and salary commitments before and after the implementation of the new minimum wage.

He also asked Education Secretaries and Directors of Finance of Local Government Education Authorities to verify figures presented by their respective councils.

Idris said verified records would be necessary to address concerns surrounding the implementation of the minimum wage and salary structures for primary school teachers.

Earlier, stakeholders at the meeting raised concerns over salary disparities between primary and secondary school teachers and called for a review of the existing structure.

The committee is expected to submit recommendations to the state government after completing its assignment.
