Katsina United player Ozoh Chinedu dies after collapsing during pre-season friendly
Katsina United Football Club has announced the death of its newly signed player, Ozoh Chinedu, following a medical emergency during a pre-season friendly against Niger Tornadoes FC at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina.
The club announced the death in a statement published on its official Facebook page on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
According to the club, Chinedu became ill during the friendly and was immediately attended to before being rushed to K-Dara Specialist Hospital in Katsina for urgent medical treatment.
The club said the player, despite efforts to save his life, later died in the early hours of Tuesday.
“The player was immediately attended to and subsequently rushed to the nearby K-Dara Specialist Hospital for urgent medical attention. However, despite efforts to save his life, Ozoh Chinedu sadly passed away,” the club said.
The death has thrown Katsina United, his teammates, coaches, management, supporters and the wider football community into mourning.
Chinedu had recently joined Katsina United and was preparing to contribute to the club’s campaign in the forthcoming season. He was previously associated with Kano Pillars FC.
The club said the circumstances surrounding his sudden death had not yet been fully established, with further details expected from the relevant authorities, medical personnel or the player’s family.
“His death has come as a major shock to his teammates, coaching crew, club management, supporters and the wider football community, particularly coming at a time when he had just joined Katsina United and was preparing for the new season,” the club said.
Katsina United expressed its condolences to Chinedu’s family, teammates, friends and supporters, praying for strength for all those affected by the loss.
