Kate Martin More Than Halfway Through Developmental Contract With Sparks

· · 2 min read

Kate Martin is more than halfway through her developmental contract with the Los Angeles Sparks. Developmental players can compete in up to 12 games before the WNBA team has to give them a full-time roster spot or waive them.

Martin played in her seventh game of the season with the Sparks on Sunday against the Portland Fire. She scored five points and recorded one rebound against the Fire. Across all seven games, Martin has averaged three points, 0.3 rebounds and 0.2 assists.

Before Sunday’s game against the Fire, Sparks head coach Lynne Roberts told reporters Martin is a “spark off the bench” and that the other players on the team trust her. But she said it can be difficult for the team to connect when developmental players are available on game and not available the next.

Martin Is Focusing on the Controllables

Martin only has five games left to play before the Sparks have to make a decision on her roster status.

The Golden State Valkyries waived Martin on May 7 before she signed the developmental contract with the Sparks. Martin said she cannot control what the front office decides, so she is focusing on working hard and being a good teammate.

“I literally can not do a single thing about that,” Martin said, per the Los Angeles Daily News “so all I can do is show up and work my butt off and have a good attitude about it and cheer for my teammates. It’s bigger than me. This isn’t about me. This is about the team, so whatever way I can make an impact I’m going to, and so I’m going to leave those decisions up to people who make those decisions.”
