Karl-Anthony Towns might just be playing the best basketball of his career on the biggest stage of his career.

While the New York Knicks‘ big man has long held a reputation as an elite scorer, going from No. 1 pick to six-time All-Star and arguably the best long-range shooting center ever, Towns’ lack of impact in other areas has previously been a mark against him. But as the Knicks have rolled to a 2-0 Finals advantage, Towns has been evolving in the playoffs, including in a tough matchup against Victor Wembanyama.

Friday’s Game 2 on the road in San Antonio was no different — Towns continued to make his impact felt all over the Finals matchup, from his 3-point shooting to his defense vs. Wembanyama. Should New York go on to win it all, he’s building a potential Finals MVP case.

Thanks to Towns’ all-around impact, the Knicks fought through an early deficit to take a four-point lead into halftime, then hold on in the closing minutes to take a 2-0 lead on the road. The big man finished with 17 points and seven rebounds in the first half alone, leading New York with a plus-minus of +13 in the first two quarters.

Just before the break, Towns drained a critical 3-pointer.

Following that shot, he was clearly feeling confident — Towns appeared to say, “He can’t f— with me” about Wembanyama.

Towns’ improved passing continued to be on display as well, including a pretty, Jokic-esque kick-out to Mikal Bridges for a 3-pointer.

As Wembanyama’s primary defender, Towns also held his opponent to just seven points in the first half of Game 2 as the Knicks took a lead into the break.

Even with a slower offensive output in the second half, Towns impressed with his rebounding. Through two Finals games, he appears to have a shot at adding a Finals MVP award to his resume, should the Knicks win two more games.

Towns also showed out in Game 1 on Wednesday, doing a little bit of everything. Most notably, he was the primary defender vs. Wembanyama on a night that the Spurs big man shot just 6-of-21 from the floor and had six turnovers.

On top of his ability to slow Wembanyama, Towns went for 18 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and one block on 7-of-15 shooting from the floor in Game 1.

It was the latest in his continuous outstanding playoff performances; as New York has gone on its dominant 13-game winning streak in the postseason, Towns has been at the center of that success, from his shooting and rebounding to an increased willingness to create plays for others and defend the rim.

Offensively, Towns has been as effective as ever as a floor-spacer — and even as a passer — to open the Finals. But throughout his career, he’s never had a reputation as an elite defender at center. He’s been shifting that narrative lately, especially over his last two games.

Heading into the series, there were questions about who Mike Brown would give the Wembanyama assignment defensively; OG Anunoby appeared to be a leading candidate. Instead, Brown stuck with his center, with Towns lining up against Wembanyama on most possessions.

Surprisingly, it’s been an effective strategy. Towns’ nimbleness as a 7-footer has made for a worthy defensive matchup against the lengthy, but crafty Wembanyama, who was mostly quiet through six quarters of the Finals.
