The Kano State House of Assembly has passed a bill seeking amendments to the 1999 Constitution to pave the way for the establishment of a state police in Nigeria.

The Assembly also approved the Kano State Supplementary Appropriation and Amendment Bill, 2026, reducing the proposed expenditure from ₦1.478 trillion to approximately ₦1.211 trillion.

The two bills were passed during Tuesday’s plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Isma’il Falgore, following consideration by the Committee of the Whole and approval at the third reading.

The proposed constitutional amendment seeks to provide a legal framework for state governments to establish and operate their own police services.

During deliberations, lawmakers examined all 26 clauses of the bill before approving it.

The move comes amid renewed national debate over decentralising policing, with growing calls for state police to address Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.

The proposal is expected to form part of the broader constitutional review process aimed at restructuring the country’s security architecture and strengthening state governments’ capacity to tackle security threats.

Meanwhile, lawmakers approved a downward review of the 2026 supplementary budget proposal submitted by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The Assembly reduced the proposed expenditure from ₦1,477,829,666,130.71 to approximately ₦1.211 trillion, representing a cut of about ₦266.61 billion.

The adjustment followed legislative scrutiny of the state’s supplementary spending requirements and proposed amendments to the 2026 appropriation framework.

In a related development, the Assembly had earlier confirmed six commissioner nominees forwarded by Governor Yusuf for appointment to the state executive council.

The nominees are Air Commodore Salisu Yusha’u (rtd.); Hon. Ibrahim Namadi; Professor Sani Lawan; Hon. Muktar Yakasai; Dr. Aminu Tsanyawa; and Hon. Idris Mustapha.
