The Board also noted that it is one of the largest public institutions in Kano State, with approximately 60,000 teaching and non-teaching personnel serving across the 44 LGEAs.

Government Addresses Promotion Backlogs

SUBEB said the administration inherited outstanding promotion backlogs affecting staff within the basic education sector.

According to the Board, the inherited backlogs included arrears spanning seven years, as well as another backlog covering approximately one-and-a-half years.

It said Governor Yusuf had previously approved and ensured the implementation of the outstanding promotions.

SUBEB said the intervention had significantly improved staff morale and restored confidence among personnel, while demonstrating the administration’s commitment to the welfare of public servants.

The Board said the latest approval for the January and July 2026 promotion cycles was part of the continuing process of addressing staff career progression and outstanding promotion obligations.

It added that all necessary preparations for the latest exercise had been completed, including staff eligibility checks and salary adjustment calculations.

Council Ratifies Approval

The approval by Governor Yusuf was subsequently ratified at a recent meeting of the Kano State Executive Council, paving the way for the release of the funds required to implement the promotions.

With the approval and ratification, SUBEB is expected to proceed with the implementation of promotions for the 18,984 eligible teaching and non-teaching staff covered by the January and July 2026 cycles.

The financial commitment of N235.1 million will cover the implementation of the promotions and associated salary adjustments for the affected personnel across the state’s 44 LGEAs.

SUBEB said the exercise would contribute to strengthening the capacity and motivation of personnel within the basic education system.

The development also forms part of the state government’s stated efforts to address inherited promotion backlogs and improve the welfare of public servants.

The Board maintained that regular implementation of promotions was important for career development and effective service delivery, particularly within a public education system employing about 60,000 teaching and non-teaching personnel.

The implementation of the 2026 promotions is expected to provide eligible staff with the corresponding career and salary adjustments following the release of the approved funds.
