Kalani Sitake makes honest admission after BYU’s double-overtime loss to UCF
UCF lined up for a 26-yard field goal on its first possession of the second overtime against No. 2 BYU on Saturday, and Will Stone made it. A flag on BYU defensive lineman Kendal Wall for roughing the kicker wiped it out, and UCF coach Scott Frost took the points off the board for a first-and-goal at the 4.
Keyone Jenkins threw a touchdown pass to Grayson Brousseau and a two-point conversion to Tyren Hornes. BYU’s answer ended on fourth down when Bear Bachmeier’s pass slipped out of Walker Lyons’ hands, and UCF won 39-31 to hand the Cougars their first loss.
“HOW IS THIS ROUGHING THE KICKER!!!! WORST CALL EVER! BYU SCREW JOB!” Dave Portnoy wrote on X.

“I didn’t get an explanation [on the roughing call]. I don’t know. From what I saw, I don’t think that’s a personal foul [for] roughing the kicker, but we still didn’t score,” Kalani Sitake said after the game.
“Sometimes the calls work out for us and sometimes they don’t, and that one, it didn’t,” Sitake said.
Did the officials cost BYU its perfect season?
With the game tied 24-24 at the end of regulation, Faletau Satuala blocked Stone’s game-winning attempt, but Stone recovered the ball, which would normally have stopped the clock with UCF still in possession. Stone’s helmet came off on the play, which triggered a 10-second runoff and sent the game to overtime. NBC rules analyst Terry McAulay said there should not have been a runoff, and a BYU facemask flag on the same play was picked up.
UCF had only reached field goal range on that drive because of an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on BYU, so the officiating cut both ways in the final minutes. Portnoy’s screw job complaint leaves out that the same crew’s clock decision spared BYU from facing UCF on another fourth down at the end of regulation.
UCF outgained BYU 463 to 373 and put up 242 yards in the first half, numbers that point to bigger problems than one flag, which is where Sitake landed too. Jenkins threw for 293 yards and accounted for four touchdowns.
Bachmeier went 16-of-32 for 257 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, including a 28-yard strike to Legend Glasker on third-and-13 in the first overtime, while BYU ran for 116 yards without LJ Martin.
“These mistakes shouldn’t be happening midseason. That’s on me,” Sitake said.
BYU fell to 6-1 and 3-1 in the Big 12, one week after beating then-No. 2 Notre Dame 28-24. UCF improved to 4-3 and 2-2 with its first home win over a top-5 team in program history.
