Just in: Journalist confirms player ‘en route to Liverpool’ ahead of high profile move

Liverpool appear to be closing in on an important defensive reinforcement, with Ronald Araújo travelling to England ahead of completing a season-long loan move from Barcelona.

The timing makes plenty of sense for the Reds. Liverpool have entered the final weeks of the transfer window short of reliable options at centre-back after Ibrahima Konaté joined Real Madrid, while new signing Jérémy Jacquet is still working his way back to fitness.

Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni have also been dealing with injuries, leaving Andoni Iraola with very little room for error before the Premier League campaign gets underway.

Araújo is travelling to Liverpool to sign on loan

Transfer journalist Ben Jacobs reported on August 9 that Araújo was set to fly in on Sunday to formalise his season-long move from Barcelona, with Liverpool also securing an option to buy the defender permanently.

That has since been backed up by Sky Sports, who report that the purchase option is worth around €55 million (£47.1m). Araújo is expected to undergo his medical before completing the switch.

Liverpool’s summer has produced mixed results defensively. Jacquet arrived from Rennes as a major investment, but Konaté’s departure and injuries to Gomez and Leoni have quickly exposed how thin the squad remains.

Sky Sports notes that Virgil van Dijk is currently Liverpool’s only fully-fit senior centre-back.

Loan move could be a smart option for the Reds

This could be one of the more sensible deals Liverpool make this summer.

Araújo brings physicality, pace, aggression and experience at Champions League level.

Just as importantly, he can also cover at right-back, giving Iraola another solution in an area where injuries have created further problems.

The loan structure also significantly reduces risk. Araújo started only 11 La Liga matches last season, so committing close to £50 million immediately would have been a gamble.

Instead, Liverpool effectively get a full season to judge whether he can handle English football before deciding on a permanent deal.

Any rival interest now looks unlikely to derail the move because an agreement between Liverpool and Barcelona is already in place, although the medical and final paperwork still need completing.
