‘Just atrocious’ – Former NFL star calls out Nick Sirianni for ‘coaching malpractice’ after Eagles loss
The Philadelphia Eagles lost in heartbreaking fashion against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and one former NFL star is blaming head coach Nick Sirianni.
The Philadelphia Eagles fell to a 2-3 record after their 19-17 loss against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London on Sunday. Despite leading 14-7 at halftime, the Eagles let the game slip away late. They were leading with as little as eight seconds left on the clock, too, but could not secure the victory.
Jake Elliott’s field goal put the Eagles ahead with less than 10 seconds to go. This could have been a walk-off field goal had HC Nick Sirianni decided to run the ball instead of pass it. Even after, they could have kicked the ball through the endzone and given the Jaguars a touchback. Instead, Ameer Abdullah returned it 53 yards to set up Cam Little’s game-winning field goal. It was bad decision-making.
Damien Harris went in on Nick Sirianni after the Philadelphia Eagles loss
The Eagles were dealing with numerous injuries, but victory against one of the NFL’s better teams was within sight. If he had done just a little better in terms of clock management, it would have changed the outcome of the game entirely.
Following the dramatic conclusion to the clash, former NFL running back Damien Harris gave his two cents on the issue, and he was not sympathetic to the head coach.
“I can’t even comprehend what I just watched,” Harris said. “The fact that Nick Sirianni put the Eagles in a position to lose this football game… You’re down so many offensive starters, so many weapons. Your backs are against the absolute wall and you’re finding ways to beat arguably one of the best teams in the NFL.
“This is an opportunity for the Eagles to find some momentum while missing some key pieces. You come out feeling great about this game if you’re Nick Sirianni and the Eagles and you win. But the fact that he put them in a position to lose this game… It was nothing short of coaching malpractice. I don’t think he can be questioned enough for some of the decision-making… It was just atrocious.”
It is difficult to disagree with this assessment, Sirianni himself accepted the blame after the result. Philadelphia and their coach need to do better moving forward, but this loss will sting for a while even if they end up responding in ideal fashion.
