John Harbaugh left no doubt about Giants' QB plan after Jaxson Dart's injury
The New York Giants have a lot to figure out at quarterback, and not much time to do so. Although it’s only Week 3 of the NFL season, losing Jaxson Dart to injury has complicated the Giants‘ plans and outlook, and now the coaching staff and front office need to decide what direction to go. However, one thing is very clear: head coach John Harbaugh and company are ensuring that when Jameis Winston, who stepped in for the injured Dart last week, takes the field in Week 3, he’ll be in a better position.
While speaking with reporters, Harbaugh made it abundantly clear that his focus was on ensuring that the game plan was catered to Jameis Winston’s “skill set.” He also offered defense of sorts to Winston after he struggled in the loss to the Los Angeles Rams, highlighting that the team’s game plan was catered to Dart.
“To me, a big part of it is building a game plan now for Jameis,” Harbaugh said. “He’ll be the starter. So build the game plan for Jameis, suit his skill set. The game plan this last week was built for Jaxson, obviously. So this will be an opportunity to do that, and that’s exactly what we’ll do.”
This isn’t a surprise, just days after Dart was ruled out for the year, but it does suggest that the Giants will find out what Winston can bring to the table before considering anything else. Obviously, there has been no shortage of trade suggestions or quarterback moves pitched by various analysts. Regardless, the first person with an opportunity to earn the Giants’ starting job this season will be Winston, and Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans could significantly impact how the team moves forward.
