Jets beat Canadiens in OT after trailing 4-0 with 3 minutes left, setting NHL record

· · 2 min read

The Winnipeg Jets snapped a nine-game winless streak with one of the most unlikely wins in NHL history on Tuesday.

With less than three minutes remaining in a game against the Montreal Canadiens, the Jets trailed 4-0. The game ended as a 5-4 win in overtime, with Dylan Samberg scoring the game-winning goal. Per ESPN, it’s the latest four-goal comeback in NHL history.

That record was previously held by the 2007-08 Los Angeles Kings, who began their comeback with 7:14 remaining.

Tyrel Bauer the Jets’ first goal with 2:38 left in the third period. Morgan Barron added another with 1:57 left. Kyle Connor made it a one-goal game with 1:00 left. Then an Alexandre Carrier tripping penalty gave Winnipeg a power play, which Connor converted with 33 seconds left to send the game to overtime.

There’s sugarcoating that for the Canadiens. This is a Jets team that entered the game with a 4-8-3 record. This is a Jets team was on a nine-game winless streak. This a Jets team that lost its previous game 7-0, to the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday. This is a Jets team that traded its Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender away not even two weeks ago.

Montreal not only choked away a four-point lead, they allowed the Jets’ quickest four-goal sequence since 1984, per ESPN. Canadiens star Cole Caufield summed things up after the game, via the Montreal Gazette:

“Some of us thought the game was over,” Caufield said. “We had a four-goal lead. There’s no excuse for this. It’s terrible.”
