Jorge Jesus says he will explain the reasons behind Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from the Portugal squad after the final match of this international break.

Ronaldo abruptly left the Portugal camp ahead of their Nations League meeting with Denmark, after widespread reports suggested tensions had been building since their previous win over Norway.

The 41-year-old was an unused substitute as Portugal ran out 2-1 winners on Sunday, with Joao Felix and Goncalo Ramos both getting on the scoresheet.

After the victory, Jesus said it was a “tactical choice” to leave Ronaldo on the bench, with Norway dominating most of the proceedings despite losing.

The Portugal captain trained away from his team-mates on Monday and Tuesday, with media reports suggesting there was a “crisis” meeting being held between Ronaldo, Jesus and Portugal Football Federation (FPF) president Pedro Proenca to clear the air.

Jesus insisted he would not “hide or run away” from the topic, but he was not willing to discuss the matter in depth ahead of Thursday’s match with Denmark.

“I will explain everything after the last game,” said Jesus in his pre-match interview.

“I have spent many years in football and I know that I did nothing that should have caused things to go differently.

“After the Norway game [this coming Sunday], we will talk about this subject. I will not hide or run away from it.

“Nobody can take away what Cristiano represents. He’s an icon and that’s not in question.”

Portugal’s final match of this international break comes at home against Norway on October 4.
