After breaking Peacock’s record for the most-watched series on the streaming service with more than 860 million minutes, Five-Star Weekend is returning for Season 2, and series star Jennifer Garner couldn’t be happier. The actress recently caught up with Collider to chat about what’s next for her character Hollis Shaw, especially now that the former miniseries is moving beyond Elin Hilderbrand’s original novel. While the writers already have some big ideas for the next chapter, Garner says one thing will be different this time around: Hollis won’t be quite so consumed by grief.

Garner also shared some fun behind-the-scenes stories from Season 1 of the eight-part show, including a day when she and co-star Gemma Chan stopped speaking to each other after filming an especially tense scene. She also recalls being told to stop crying during one of D’Arcy Carden‘s performances because she was so moved by the comedian’s work. As it turns out, there were plenty of emotional moments happening on both sides of the camera.

Garner discusses Hollis’ struggle to hide her grief and why so many women can relate to keeping up appearances when life falls apart.

COLLIDER: Hollis is so good at keeping up appearances while falling apart inside, and I feel like that’s such a relatable thing to so many women because we’re expected to hold everything together. How did you find that balance between who she wants everyone to see and what she’s actually feeling?

JENNIFER GARNER: Thank you for such a great question, and it’s good to see you again, Tania. I think that that is a big part of Hollis, and part of what makes this show so relatable is that it keeps asking you to look at all of these truths of womanhood, especially in the middle of your life, when you do have everything happening at the same time. I mean, that is life. You have the worst day of your life, and something beautiful happens at the same time often, or there’s humor in the darkest moments, even if it’s just that you are the sickest one in your family, but you’re still the one taking care of everyone else. Those are just part of being the matriarch of a family, or of being a woman.

So how, in this case? I felt like Hollis really tries not to wear it on her sleeve. I think that I am more porous; like, everyone around me knows if I’m having a really hard time. Maybe not the public, but the people around me — my friends — would know, and Hollis is trying to hide it even from them — even from herself. She’s so cut off from her emotions. So, it was really kind of finding that balance and not leaning into what I would do, which would be, “Oh my gosh, you guys, can you believe this happened?” But to hold on to the facade as long as she could.

Garner Reveals the ‘Five-Star Weekend’ Scenes That Caught Her Off Guard

From D’Arcy Carden bringing her to tears to a tense day with Gemma Chan, Garner recalls the moments that surprised her most on set.

And with such a talented ensemble. I loved everyone in this cast. Was there a scene where one of your co-stars completely caught you off guard but in the best way? I love the little combinations of every single actor together.

GARNER: I think everyone at some point or another caught me off guard and brought me to a real place of emotion, even when I wasn’t supposed to. Like D’Arcy Carden in a scene where she is really confronting her husband finally, and she was so heartbreaking. It’s her moment. It’s her moment; we’re not supposed to have the emotion, and they kept being like, “Jennifer, stop crying.” And it was just like, “But she’s so brilliant!”

Or Chloë [Sevigny] just kept knocking my socks off and making me so emotional because it would be my coverage, and we’re doing it and whatever, and all of a sudden she would just do one where she completely changed everything, got really emotional, and then in reaction to her, it changed my read. Then Regina [Hall], first of all, she just made us laugh all the time. She’s so funny, but she has this whole other depth. And when Regina’s character, Dru-Ann, is angry with my character, Hollis, I so badly didn’t want Regina to have that look on her face looking at me. That was like a blurry moment for me because I just love and respect her so much that I’m just like, “Oh, please, let’s be done with this scene.”

And Gemma [Chan] and I really had to go after each other. There was a whole day that we did not speak to each other because we were really confronting each other in this pantry, and at the end of the day, we had to have a big hug.

‘The Five-Star Weekend’ Season 2 Is Moving Beyond Elin Hilderbrand’s Novel

Garner shares what she learned from the writers’ room and why Hollis won’t be quite so consumed by grief in the new season.

Now that you guys are coming for Season 2, and you’re entering completely new territory beyond the novel, as both an actor and EP, what excites you most about getting to explore Hollis without actually knowing where the story is going this time around?

GARNER: I know! I mean, I just went to sit with the writers the other day, and the writers’ room is full. I mean, I think that they have a very clear path through the second season, and they have amazing ideas, but it’s definitely different without a book to underpin the ideas and the themes of the show.

There’s so much that women go through; there’s so much left to be mined, but there’s also a lot of fun. Hollis is not quite as much in the thick of grief as she was in the first season, so while that will, of course, always be part of her, I don’t think that she’ll be as undone by losing her husband as she was in the first season.
