Jaylen Brown assesses early days with 76ers as training camp continues
CAMDEN, N.J. — The Philadelphia 76ers are three days into an important training camp as they move toward a season in which they plan on seriously contending for a championship in the upcoming season. This is a supremely talented roster with the likes of proven champions Jaylen Brown and LeBron James joining Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe in an effort to reach the mountaintop.
Brown is coming off a phenomenal season in which he averaged 28.7 points and led the Boston Celtics to a 56-26 record and the No. 2 seed in the East. He did so in what many considered to be a “gap year” with the Jayson Tatum injury at the forefront. However, Brown took a big step forward as a leader and made sure everybody was ready to go.
Three days into camp, Brown gave his thoughts on the Sixers. Obviously, still early days, but everybody is working hard and focused on winning.
“Just getting everybody being acclimated to one another,” said Brown on Thursday. “I’m getting acclimated to the building, to the staff, and just getting the system downloaded and everything. Just downloading all the information, and some of the guys, a lot of the guys have been great, just communicating, making everybody get on the same page.”
Brown was working out with youngsters Justin Edwards and Rayan Rupert after practice on Thursday as the three competed in a shooting drill on the far end of the court. As camp has continued, Brown revealed the respect he is receiving from his young teammates as he looks to help them grow.
“A lot of them have shown me a lot of respect,” Brown stated. “Ask me questions, or ask to jump in my workouts, and I’m welcome and I’m open to all of that, being a teacher. I was a guy who was always asking questions, so I appreciate it when the young guys are asking questions.”

As far as his star teammates are concerned, Brown operates a lot out of the mid-post, which is an area where Embiid and James operate at times. That is something that will have to be figured out over the next couple of weeks or months or however long it takes to build in Philadelphia. It will be interesting to see how all of that plays out with three high IQ players.
“I think we just, one, it’s a feel thing, and two, we just we try to establish some spacing,” Brown acknowledged. “We try to establish position on the floor, like the style of play. I think we’re still kind of figuring it out. Like when I am going to go, when not to go, when big fella is going down in the post, when I can put pressure on the rim, just trying to find that balance. I think it’s only three days in, so it may take a little bit of time, but I’m looking forward to the journey.”
The journey is the big word here. The Sixers have so many new pieces and there will be bumps in the road. Therefore, Brown knows that patience will be the operative word with this group as time moves on. The Sixers won’t be contenders right off the bat. It will take time to get everyone on the same page for the future.
“I’m looking forward to it,” finished the 5-time All-Star. “I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be a great journey. It’s going to come with a lot of ups and downs. I’m looking forward to it. How you respond to adversity is going I’m just preparing for that. I know the fans are excited. It takes time to build that relationship. It takes time to build that relationship with each other. As everybody always says, trust the process.”
