Jason Wilcox now favours manager he opposed when Dan Ashworth pushed for his appointment
Michael Carrick seemingly finds himself in an untenable situation following Manchester United’s humiliating 4-1 defeat at Como.
Bruno Fernandes’ post-match comments suggested that players are no longer fully behind the United head coach. When you combine this factor with the Red Devils’ winless streak of seven games, it is easy to see only one outcome from hereon.
Carrick will remain in charge to lead United against Bournemouth over the weekend, but it is believed that INEOS have already started the process of identifying possible replacements to take over at the helm.
Eddie Howe emerges as favourite for Manchester United job
According to talkSPORT, Manchester United technical director Jason Wilcox is “leaning towards” appointing Eddie Howe if Michael Carrick is sacked.
It is claimed that former Germany and Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann has “already been sounded out” over his interest in managing United.
The German tactician is thought to be the standout option in the eyes of head of recruitment Christopher Vivell.
However, Wilcox’s opinion is “likely to hold more weight in the eyes of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer family.”
Jason Wilcox prefers Eddie Howe
Wilcox appears to be focused on Premier League-proven talent, having signed the likes of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba to strengthen the United squad over the last two summer windows.
The former Manchester City man supposedly intends to take the same approach in the search for United’s next manager.
Wilcox is believed to prefer Howe due to his experience in the Premier League, “even though he rallied against appointing him when Dan Ashworth put him forward prior to Ruben Amorim’s arrival.”
Howe has had successful stints at Bournemouth and Newcastle United, leading the Magpies to Champions League football twice during his reign.
Aston Villa boss Unai Emery also fits Wilcox’s criteria, but it would prove very costly to secure his services even if he wanted the job.
