The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, says candidates will have an option to use their personal computers for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination from 2027.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ish-aq Oloyede, made this known during the 2026 Policy Meeting on Admissions into Tertiary Education in Abuja on Monday.

What JAMB said about personal computers for UTME

Prof. Oloyede said the Board would begin a “Bring Your Own Device” option for UTME candidates from next year.

That means candidates may sit for the examination with their own computers, rather than depending only on systems provided at Computer-Based Test centres.

He said JAMB would insert a flash drive into the device during the examination to prevent malpractice. The Board wants the process to remain safe while giving candidates a more convenient exam setup.

Why JAMB wants the BYOD option

Oloyede explained that the plan would make the UTME cheaper and easier to manage.

He also linked the idea to complaints from candidates who often report that their computer went off during the examination, a problem that can affect confidence and comfort during the test.

For many candidates, a familiar device may remove one worry from an already tense exam day. Still, JAMB said it would keep safeguards in place to protect the integrity of the examination.

Other plans for 2027

The Registrar added that other plans were already at about 90 per cent stage and would also be introduced in 2027.

He gave the update while speaking on the 2025 admissions exercise and the 2026 UTME/DE performance during the policy meeting.

What candidates should know

JAMB has not removed the need for exam control.

The Board said candidates may use personal computers, but the exam process would still include checks meant to stop malpractice and protect the test.

For now, candidates should note the main point: JAMB plans to start the personal computer option for UTME from 2027, with a flash drive used during the examination.
