Jaguars roster: Why coaches believe Montaric Brown can make another jump

Between now and training camp, we will be going through the Jacksonville Jaguars’ full 90-man roster, previewing each player.

Up next is cornerback Montaric Brown, who wears No. 1.

Brown was a seventh-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft and spent his first four seasons in Jacksonville. A free agent this offseason, Brown signed a three-year, $31.8 million deal to return to the Jaguars.

Brown took a big step forward last season, showcasing his abilities to start on a weekly basis and perform at a high level while doing so. He allowed a completion rate of just 54% on 68 targets and held opponents to just 10.4 yards per catch.

Brown also flashed impressive ball production, coming away with two interceptions and forcing nine pass breakups.

Following last season’s performance, a jumping-off point for Brown in 2026 could be the continuity of being in Anthony Campanile’s scheme for a second year. Rather than learning a new system on the fly as he did last offseason, Brown can now build off what’s already been established.

Brown, along with Travis Hunter and Jourdan Lewis, are expected to make up the Jaguars’ starting cornerback trio.

Head coach Liam Coen expects another jump from Brown this season.

“He’s always kinda played in practice with confidence,” Coen said. “There’s areas in which he can continue to improve, but, look, we signed him to a deal, and he comes out and is just… him. He’s practiced the same way, he’s approached the meetings and practices and games the same way since I’ve been here the whole time, so he’s consistent. He’s a pro. I think we’ll see another step from Buster this year in terms of confidence, especially in the red zone.”

Campanile is very bullish about what’s ahead for Brown as well.
