Jacoby Brissett practices on first day of Cardinals training camp

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett was present for the first official day of team training camp on Thursday, July 23. That part was expected after Brissett arrived the day before when players were required to report to camp.

Taking part in the first camp practice at State Farm Stadium, however, was not a given. But Brissett was on the field for a pre-practice walk-through, and did some early work in practice after that despite not having been signed to the new contract he seeks.

Brissett is under contract for the 2026 season but seeks a salary more reflective of an NFL starting quarterback, which he was for 12 of 14 games played last season for the Cardinals.

Brissett reported to the team’s mandatory minicamp last in June but did not participate in any voluntary team workouts in the offseason.

“I describe it as Practice 1 on July 23rd,” Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur said, earlier saying that contract negotiations have been productive but are still ongoing.

Brissett being on the field — he threw passes to receivers and did drills with the Cardinals’ other quarterbacks — seemed to indicate that an agreement on a deal could be closer to getting done.

“He’s here, he’s under contract, and it’s the first day of practice,” LaFleur said. “Didn’t have him through OTAs or minicamp or anything like that, so right now, just getting him up to speed with our operation, with our cadence, with our formations, our no-huddle package, our pass game, our run game, that kind of stuff. So, not really worried about any of that stuff right now.”

Cardinals veteran defensive back Budda Baker took to social media to urge the Cardinals to get a deal done with Brissett earlier in July.

“At the end of the day, I want all of our players to get theirs and ultimately all of our players to be in the building and being able to practice, being able to get better,” Baker said. “Because you only get better by practicing. So I didn’t know that Jacoby was practicing today, but that’s a great thing.”

Baker hoped Brissett would work with the No. 1 offense, so he could get a shot at an interception, he said with a smile.

Cardinals offensive lineman Isaiah Adams took part in practice after facing weapons-related charges in Canada earlier in the week.

Adams, a possible starter at guard, wasn’t made available to reporters to comment, but his attorney told The Arizona Republic that Adams “is completely innocent in this matter.”

“He’s doing good,” LaFleur said of Adams. “It was good to see him.”

The Cardinals opened training camp with four players on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

They are linebacker Josh Sweat, offensive lineman Paris Johnson Jr., cornerback Garrett Williams and tight end Tip Reiman.

LaFleur said there isn’t anything to be concerned about with Johnson, the Cardinals’ left tackle. He called it “maintenance stuff” for Johnson and said he will be back “before you know it.”

Sweat is “in a good spot.” LaFleur said, and is expected to practice in camp at some point. Baker said Sweat is dealing with previous injuries he’s had and is “getting his body right so he can come out and practice.”

Johnson and Sweat are dealing with knee injuries at present, LaFleur said.
