J.D. PicKell defends Texas A&M as fans complain about NIL spending

All athletic department budgets are not created equal, no matter how many rules or regulations are passed. It will take years before college football reaches anything close to fairness. Generational money is being spent on teenagers to play a sport, and with the amount of revenue the sport generates, many believe it is justified. Texas A&M is a leader in this space, and naturally, that brings plenty of criticism.

The truth is that several programs can afford to match whatever A&M offers. Nic Scourton mentioned this a few seasons ago when he said he received multiple similar NIL offers but chose to play in his hometown. This season, however, all eyes are on A&M because reports indicate the program is spending more than ten million dollars on this incoming class. That number sounds excessive until you look at the full picture.

First, you need the budget, and A&M has it. Then you need a staff and facilities that attract top recruits, and the Aggies check those boxes as well. In a hyper-competitive NIL market, landing more top one hundred players naturally means spending more. That is the reality.

How anyone feels about it does not matter. Everyone agrees that guardrails will eventually be necessary and they must be enforceable. Until that happens, the bidding war will continue and the programs willing to go all in will find legal ways to fund their roster-building efforts.
