It's Officially The End Of An Era For Prime Video's Hit New Stephen King Series

· · 3 min read

Prime Video has a new successful Stephen King series, but the major global hit has already been surpassed on the streamer by a returning action thriller, marking the end of an era. There have been several King adaptations in recent years, with some of the author’s biggest books or most interesting concepts being adapted for both the big and small screens. When it comes to King’s TV shows, HBO’s It: Welcome to Derry is perhaps the biggest recent case of a new way of exploring the author’s fan-favorite projects. MGM+’s The Institute, which has surpassed the contents of the book, is another.

Parallel to the rise of King adaptations recently is Mike Flanagan cementing himself as one of the biggest names in horror today. They connect in a key way, as Flanagan has adapted four of King’s novels so far, with two more on the way, as Flanagan is reportedly developing new movies based on the King books The Mist and The Dark Tower. Flanagan’s most recent adaptation of King’s work was Prime Video’s Carrie series. The TV show became an instant global streaming hit, but it has now suffered a drop, which has come after an exciting announcement regarding its future.

Prime Video’s Carrie Is No Longer A No. 1 Sensation

At the time of writing, Carrie is the 2nd most popular TV show on Prime Video in the United States, having been dethroned by The Terminal List, according to FlixPatrol data. The Terminal List is an action thriller series that stars Chris Pratt as the US Navy SEAL James Reece, who finds himself in the middle of a dark conspiracy. The Terminal List season 2 recently dropped all of its eight episodes at once on Prime Video on October 21, coming four years after the release of season 1 on July 1, 2022. That long wait likely played a role in Carrie‘s dethroning.

Carrie also dropped all of its season 1 episodes on the same day on the streamer, with the King adaptation arriving on Prime Video on October 7. The show would go on to lead the streaming service’s charts, only being surpassed by The Terminal List on October 23, a couple of days after Pratt’s action thriller series returned with new episodes. While Carrie is no longer Prime Video’s show in the United States, the horror series still ranks higher than several major TV shows, including Neagley, Reacher, Off Campus, Sterling Point, Helluva Boss, and more. Carrie is an enduring hit.

Carrie was dethroned on Prime Video’s chart a day after a major announcement, as Carrie season 2 is officially in development at Prime Video. This means that Flanagan will most likely be able to complete his planned arc for the teen drama. Speaking to Collider in September, prior to the show’s release, Flanagan revealed that he had a three-season arc planned for Carrie, calling the story he had to tell a trilogy. With Carrie posting strong numbers on Prime Video and season 2 already confirmed shortly after season 1’s debut, the Stephen King adaptation should fulfill its dream scenario.
