It's happening, FSG take giant step closer to Liverpool sale

· · 2 min read

FSG have now hinted heavily at the sale of Liverpool Football Club. This really does seem to be happening.

It has been pretty clear over the course of the year, maybe longer, that FSG are open to selling Liverpool. In fact, they don’t actually have a say in the matter any more.

FSG sold 38 per cent of the club to 1829 Holdings, a consortium made up of several incredibly wealthy people. It’s fronted by Amit Bhatia, though Jeff Bezos is the true headliner.

That deal means the current owners remain the majority owners and FSG still direct Liverpool. However, the deal included a clause, per the Guardian, that allows 1892 Holdings to purchase a majority share in the club within 12 months.

Though, that’s now within around 10 months.

And the talk coming out of FSG certainly hints at that happening. You’d think it was nigh on certain, in fact.

FSG hint at mega-sale

FSG CEO Sam Kennedy spoke to the media this week and he quite bluntly stated what the priority at the organisation is right now. And it isn’t Liverpool.

Kennedy, who is also in charge of the Boston Red Sox, was asked if he’d say the baseball franchise was the priority for FSG right now. His answer? ‘I would’.

That’s a far, far more blatant answer by a higher-up in FSG than we’ve seen before. It’s conspicuous, really, that they’d so blatantly state that Liverpool is not the priority and that their main focus is the Red Sox.

Essentially talking down a major asset like that is a strange one. Unless, of course, you have a priority because you know the long-term investment in the other isn’t actually yours.

And that’s the only angle that makes sense here. The growth is quite clearly at Liverpool, the more significant asset and by far the larger entity. FSG viewing their priority to be anything else is about as clear a sign as you could hope for that they don’t see a long-term future at Anfield.

As we say, that’s not even in their own hands any more and we do believe this is them preparing to no longer be the majority shareholders. Liverpool looks set to change hands – and comments like this confirm that.
