It's clearer than ever who Liverpool's next midfield transfer will be

· · 3 min read

At the moment, Liverpool’s midfield feels rather lacklustre.

Even though Richard Hughes spent £116 million on Florian Wirtz during the last summer transfer window, it feels like they’re nowhere near the level they need to be.

Ryan Gravenberch has been poor and Alexis Mac Allister has forgotten how to run with neither of them meeting expectations.

This is why most of the players Liverpool are being linked with are central midfielders as, with the system that Andoni Iraola is likely to use, he needs people who won’t stop running and who won’t stop trying to get the ball into attacking positions.

And now, a fresh update has made it obvious who the Reds’ first midfield signing could be.

Jose Mourinho wants Alexis Mac Allister at Real Madrid

As mentioned, Mac Allister was a fraction of his former self during the 2025-26 season but that hasn’t stopped Real Madrid from being interested in signing him.

In fact, now that Jose Mourinho is in charge, the Portuguese manager is actually the main force behind the deal with Football Insider reporting that despite the arrival of Bernardo Silva, the Argentinian is still high on his shortlist of players to sign.

“Liverpool could sanction Alexis Mac Allister‘s exit this summer if he attracts more suitors by impressing at the World Cup,” they wrote.

“As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, he is one of the most likely senior stars to leave the club in the summer window as Real Madrid eye a move.

“New Los Blancos boss Mourinho is keen to add Mac Allister to his ranks following the impending signing of Bernardo Silva.

“They have also been linked with a move for Dominik Szoboszlai, but Liverpool’s reluctance to let the Hungarian star leave means a move for Mac Allister looks much more likely.

“Mac Allister’s decline over the last campaign means that new Reds boss Andoni Iraola will look to add to his midfield as the 28-year-old potentially moves on.”

The fact that Mourinho wants Mac Allister means that Eduardo Camavinga could be on his way out and, with Liverpool looking for new left-backs and central midfielders, the Frenchman already ticks a fair few boxes.

Eduardo Camavinga is clearly the best transfer for Liverpool to complete this summer

With Real Madrid already signing Silva, Mourinho’s current group of midfielders will already have less playing time.

Of course, Camavinga and Silva play in different areas of the midfield the arrival of the Portuguese international could still hinder his teammates playing time.

At the moment, he’s seen as the understudy to Aurelien Tchouameni but, the fact that he can play across many areas of the pitch will certainly play in his favour.

This versatility is one of the main reasons why Liverpool must target Camavinga this summer.

The midfielder is still just 23 years old which means he has loads of time to grow into an even better player than he already is.

Camavinga would probably demand quite a large fee due to his age and experience but, if Real want Mac Allister and Liverpool want the Frenchman, a deal could certainly be struck.

Of course, other midfielders are available for Liverpool to sign but, if both clubs want one another’s players, it surely makes sense for them to help one another out.
