‘It’s anomaly to compromise doctors’ welfare in Nigeria’ — FCT NMA

Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, FCT Chapter, Dr George Ebong has said it is an anomaly for the welfare of doctors to be compromised in Nigeria.

He made this known in his remarks on Wednesday at the 2026 NMA National Executive Council meeting in Abuja.

According to him, the Nigerian government at all levels needs to prioritise the welfare of doctors so they can provide unfettered services in saving lives.

“The welfare of doctors cannot be compromised to save the medical profession. It is an anomaly.

“NMA FCT looks forward to robust discussions and actionable resolutions that will move us forward,” he stated.

On his part, the National President of the NMA, Prof. Afekhide-Ernest Omoti, urged doctors to uphold accountability in the discharge of their duties.

He noted that doctors cannot continue to demand accountability from the government while refusing to practise the same.

“The NMA cannot demand accountability from the government, employers and healthcare institutions while refusing to practise accountability within our own association,” he stated.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Dr Kamil Shoretire, who was a keynote speaker at the NEC meeting, said the Federal Government needs the continued support of doctors to address the challenge of healthcare professional migration, commonly known as the ‘Japa’ syndrome.

“They also need the support of the government to continue to excel, especially in the face of the ‘Japa’ syndrome.

“A lot of our medical professionals, especially doctors and nurses, have left the shores of this country,” he noted.
