“It was great to see”: Ashley Young picks out two Man United players deserving of praise in spite of late drama vs Everton

There was more disappointment for Manchester United fans on Sunday night.

The Red Devils threw away the lead twice in their 2-2 draw with Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Benjamin Sesko thought he had won the game with a late goal, but an outstanding strike from Ainsley Maitland-Niles in the 96th minute ensured the points were shared.

This result means United have just four points from their opening three games against sides all expected to finish in the bottom half of the table.

Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young’s thoughts

Both Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young, who have played for both Manchester United and Everton, gave their views on the game on the BBC.

Despite the negativity swirling around the game from a United perspective, they did manage to find one thing to be positive about after the full-time whistle.

Commenting on Luke Shaw, Rooney said, “he was really good. Defensively he was leading and he was good going forward as well. He looked more of a threat today in his connection with Marcus [Rashford].”

His fellow pundit and former teammate Young also echoed Rooney’s thoughts.

Young claimed, “it was great to see that left side and the connection they have had for years, it was like Luke Shaw when he first came to the club.”

In spite of a questionable start to the season, Shaw did interact well with Rashford down the left and played a fantastic ball into the box, which Benjamin Sesko headed in.

Young, explaining what Shaw did well offensively, said, “he goes so quick, overlaps and gets balls into the box, gets the defence on the back foot.”

United now face Sabah in their return to the Champions League on Thursday night before a blockbuster Manchester derby at Old Trafford this coming Sunday evening.
