“It took a while to digest" – Horst Steffen reflects on Werder Bremen dismissal

Relieved of his duties in February 2026, Horst Steffen has since revealed how difficult it was to accept Werder Bremen’s decision.

“It took a while to digest the dismissal,” the 57-year-old explained in an interview with RTL/Sky, having held the position for just 8 months.

“Being dismissed is certainly not the nicest thing you want to experience as a coach, although I know it happens,” he added.

After a draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach, their tenth consecutive match without a win, Bremen’s bosses made the call on 1 February.

Ending Steffen’s reign after after just 215 days, Daniel Thioune was appointed as his successor and subsequently led Bremen to safety.

“I’m doing well,” Steffen said, coming to terms with his failure at Bremen before he discussed his plans for the future:

“I would like to have another club that runs similarly to Elversberg, where it’s mostly successful and lasts longer.”

Steffen declined to comment on whether he had been approached in recent months. His expectations, however, are clearly defined:

“I’m already feeling the excitement. Nevertheless, it has to be the case that I have the feeling it’s the right club.”

“It’s about development, it’s about the players who are here, it’s about the club officials who are here, and that has to fit with the attitude.

“It must fit with the things I present. If that happens, then there will certainly be another Horst Steffen on the sidelines,” he announced.
