Iraola learning which Liverpool players are ‘ready to play every three days’

Andoni Iraola revealed he will make changes to his Liverpool starting lineup for their EFL Cup clash with Tottenham to find out “who is ready to play games every three days”.

The Reds have endured a mixed start to life under Iraola, drawing three of their first four Premier League games, including a goalless outing with Fulham on Saturday.

Liverpool did, however, begin their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid at Anfield.

Iraola’s side have already played three games in September, and still have two fixtures to go this month before the first international break of the season.

The Spaniard is keen to rotate his squad against Spurs, insisting not every player can cope with the busy schedule.

“There are players who play every three days with no issues. There are other players where the risk is bigger and the performances are different,” said Iraola.

“I have to learn who is ready to play games every three days and who needs a rest so their performance level isn’t affected.

“I think we will see players we haven’t seen still and I am really looking forward to seeing. I feel they’re going to play well and help us and they still haven’t had their chance.”

Liverpool have progressed from three of their four previous EFL Cup ties against Spurs in the 21st century, most recently in the 2024-25 semi-final over two legs.

The Reds have also progressed from each of their last seven EFL Cup third-round ties, last falling at this stage in 2018-19 when losing 1-2 at home to Chelsea.

Spurs have won just one of their last 30 away games against Liverpool in all competitions (D8 L21), and none of their last 17 (D5 L12) since a 2-0 Premier League win in May 2011 under Harry Redknapp.

“It’s not about the ranking the competitions. It is a different competition,” said Iraola about the importance of the EFL Cup.

“I am sure if you ask if you prefer to win a Champions League and Premier League game, but there’s no guarantee that if you rest players you’re going to win the next one.

“In the end, we want to win and play well and that’s what we are going to try.”
