Instant Analysis: Falcons pummel Saints on Monday Night Football
The Cooper Rush era feels like a million years ago, because these Atlanta Falcons are a completely different football team than they were in Weeks 1-2. Tonight’s dominant 45-24 victory over the New Orleans Saints puts them at 2-2 on the year, tying the Carolina Panthers at the top of the NFC South and effectively hitting the reset button for their season.
Let’s review how things went in all three phases for yet another impressive showing from the Falcons under the lights.
It took less than 90 seconds for the Falcons to score their first points of the game, as running back Bijan Robinson got things started with a blazing 59-yard touchdown run on just the third play from scrimmage. Atlanta stuck with the ground game most of the night, with Robinson getting a heavy workload as well as a healthy amount of carries for backup Brian Robinson Jr.. It worked out pretty well, as they combined for 207 yards and five touchdowns on the ground, averaging 6.3 yards per carry.
The passing game was not quite as explosive as it was last week in Green Bay, but Michael Penix still looked pretty sharp in his second start of the 2026 campaign. His connection with wide receiver Drake London (five catches, 96 yards) is the most promising thing he has going for him, and Penix also managed to get tight end Kyle Pitts finally involved, offensively. Penix also got Jahan Dotson his first touchdown in a Falcons uniform. He finished the night 15/20 for 223 yards, no interceptions, one touchdown and a 127.7 passer rating.
Atlanta’s NFL-best rushing defense continues to crush their opponents’ attempts to get going on the ground. It didn’t help that the Saints were missing their starting running back Travis Etienne, but they were held to just 50 rushing yards total and averaged a measly 2.6 yards per carry.
As for the Falcons pass rush, things continue to go swimmingly even without starting edge rushers Jalon Walker and James Pearce. Atlanta was able to generate consistent pressure on Saints quarterback Tyler Shough, who had to throw on the run a lot. While they only got to him for two sacks, the Falcons landed 12 QB hits, with Yasir Abdullah tallying a team-high four. One possible hiccup was the injury to Za’Darius Smith, who left the game early with a concussion.
The short-handed secondary was far from perfect, giving up big statlines to wide receivers Chris Olave (eight catches, 116 yards) and Devaugh Vele (six catches, 54 yards, one TD) but there was no obvious weak link in coverage like Mike Hughes was last week against the Packers. Rookie linebacker Harold Perkins Jr. continues to flash in coverage, as well.
With the offensive and defensive units dominating, there wasn’t much for the Falcons special teams unit to do, tonight. Jake Bailey only had to punt the ball twice, totaling 72 yards, while Nick Folk made his one field goal attempt from 29 yards out. Once again the most-exciting element here was rookie receiver Zachariah Branch showing his potential as a return specialist, totaling 25 yards on a punt return and 65 yards total on three kickoff returns.
