Insecurity: Five Borno communities return home as farming, schools resume

· · 1 min read

Five communities in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State have been resettled after years of displacement caused by the Boko Haram insurgency, with farming, education and fishing activities gradually resuming.

The Executive Chairman of Kukawa Local Government Area, Mustapha Muhammad, disclosed this in Maiduguri on Tuesday.

Muhammad said improved security had enabled displaced residents to return to their ancestral homes and regain access to their farmlands.

“The farmers are now returning to their ancestral homes after the restoration of peace in the area, and they are now having access to their farmlands,” he said.

He said the return of residents had also facilitated the reopening and reconstruction of schools, with more children gradually returning to the classroom.

Muhammad also said fishing activities, which were disrupted by the insurgency, were gradually resuming, alongside fish marketing and other related businesses.

He, however, said some security challenges remained, particularly for residents travelling between communities.

According to him, people using some routes still require military escorts, although attacks and ambushes have reduced along major routes, including Mairari-Cross Kauwa and Doro.

He said the local government was working with security agencies to sustain the security gains and enable residents to move freely and resume their businesses.
