Injured Mike Evans is bad news for 49ers
The NFL season has already tested the San Francisco 49ers’ depth at wide receiver, and the team could be facing another concern heading into Week 3. San Francisco is 2-0 after opening the season with wins over the Seattle Seahawks and Miami Dolphins.
The 49ers entered the season with several questions surrounding their receiver group. Injuries had already reduced their options, putting more responsibility on the players available to quarterback Brock Purdy.
That situation became even more difficult during Sunday’s win over the Dolphins. San Francisco lost Demarcus Robinson to an ankle injury before Mike Evans also left the game with a hip issue, leaving the 49ers with fewer healthy options at the position.

Mike Evans misses 49ers practice with hip injury
Evans was among the 49ers players who did not practice Wednesday because of his hip injury. The team also listed Robinson with an ankle injury, while defensive tackle James Thompson and defensive end Romello Height were dealing with their respective injuries.
The 49ers’ official injury update, which confirmed Evans was not practicing Wednesday because of the hip issue.
Evans suffered the injury during the 49ers’ 35-13 win over Miami and did not return. SacTown Sports’ Brenden Nunes reported that head coach Kyle Shanahan said Evans likely could have returned if the game was different. That provides some reason for optimism, although his practice status will need to be monitored.
49ers already have a depleted wide receiver room
The bigger concern for San Francisco is the state of its receiver depth. Robinson suffered a high-ankle sprain and is expected to miss time, while the 49ers were already dealing with other absences at the position.
Robinson’s injury is important because he had taken on a larger role in the offense. Without him and Evans, the 49ers finished their win over Miami with Deebo Samuel, Jacob Cowing and KhaDarel Hodge as their available wide receivers.
San Francisco has already acknowledged the need for additional receiver help after the injuries. The team cannot afford to lose another starting option, especially with Arizona coming to town in Week 3.
