Jordan Henderson is already switching focus to England’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway, despite his tournament-ending injury.

Henderson was an unused substitute as England saw out a memorable 3-2 win over Mexico in the last 16.

Yet in the celebrations after the match, Henderson fell over the advertising boards and landed heavily on his arm, sustaining a serious wrist injury.

Henderson’s tournament is now over, though the 36-year-old, who has featured for only six minutes in North America, suggested he will be staying with the England squad as they prepare for the latter stages of the competition.

“A night to remember that’s for sure! What an incredible performance against all the different challenges,” Henderson posted on social media.

“So proud to be a part of this special team. Thanks for all the support, another big one Saturday.”

Only Brazil (14) and Germany (14) have qualified for more World Cup quarter-finals than England, with this set to be their 11th appearance at this stage in the competition.

The Three Lions have progressed from just three of those matches, however, conceding 2+ goals in seven of those ties.

England have been eliminated from five of their last six World Cup knockout round matches against European opposition and each of their last three in succession.

Their latest such defeat saw them lose 2-1 to France in the quarter-finals of the 2022 tournament.
