Just four months ago, Sanju Samson was the toast of Indian cricket. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star was never known for his consistency and questions kept popping up on whether he really belonged at the international level.
However, Samson answered every critic by stepping up when it mattered the most – at the T20 World Cup 2026 knockouts.
The Indian wicket-keeper scored 321 runs in just five innings, including match-winning knocks against West Indies (97* in Super 8), England (89 in semi-final) and New Zealand (89 in the final), and walked away with the Player of the Tournament award as India retained the T20 World Cup.
That was March 8. Fast forward two months and IPL 2026 saw the emergence of a new phenom.
Rajasthan Royals‘ 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi dominated the headlines, winning multiple awards, including the Orange Cap and MVP, following his 776-run campaign at a whopping 237.30 strike rate, which also saw him hit a record-breaking 72 sixes in the season, breaking Chris Gayle’s record.
Samson, meanwhile, hardly had a poor campaign himself. He finished with 477 runs at a strike rate of 165 in 14 innings – his second-best IPL season by runs, which included two centuries.
But when was “good” ever enough when a generational superstar arrives years ahead of schedule?
Sooryavanshi had produced one of the greatest individual IPL seasons ever, while Samson’s clutch showing at the World Cup felt like an achievement that earned his right to continue opening for India.
Then came June.
In India, where there is scarcely a week without cricket dominating the headlines, there is always a tendency to move on too quickly. A nation that cherishes its cricketing memories and nostalgia often forgets to appreciate them in the present.
New heroes emerge. Old ones are constantly scrutinised and yesterday’s champion is rarely guaranteed the throne tomorrow.
India’s tour of Ireland and England has become exactly that for Samson. His recent failures with the bat have coincided with India’s embarrassing T20I series defeat to Ireland amid calls for Sooryavanshi’s highly anticipated international debut.
That has left the Player of the Tournament from India’s World Cup triumph unexpectedly looking over his shoulder just four months after standing on top of the world.

The unfortunate reality for Samson is that every time he fails, calls for his obvious replacement by the 15-year-old will keep getting louder.
Sooryavanshi forced the selectors’ hand after an incredible breakout IPL season. The 15-year-old followed it up by smashing 94 off just 29 balls in the India A vs Sri Lanka A Tri-Series final, including an 11-ball half-century – the fastest fifty ever recorded in List A cricket.
Meanwhile, Samson has endured a miserable start to the UK tour. He was dismissed for scores of five and a first-ball duck against Ireland before falling for just one run in the opening T20I against England.
His last 10 overseas T20I innings read: 1, 0, 5, 2, 109, 0, 0, 107, 0, 0. A remarkable sequence featuring two centuries and five ducks. It perfectly sums up how both brilliance and inconsistency have defined much of his international career.
Sooryavanshi, meanwhile, arrives in the hottest form of his life so far. While English conditions would present a completely different challenge for the teenager, irrepressible confidence is firmly on his side.
Whether that is enough to convince India to hand him a debut remains to be seen, but every low score from Samson makes it harder to justify keeping one of India’s brightest young talents waiting.
