Indiana football's Curt Cignetti on Brandon Sorsby: 'He's going to be a great pro'

Indiana University football coach Curt Cignetti joined the Rich Eisen show and talked the National Championship, Fernando Mendoza and more about this upcoming college football season.

Cignetti and Eisen also addressed one of the most talked about topics in college sports right now: the Brendan Sorsby gambling case.

“I think anything is possible at this point. I do think we’re at a tipping point. I think some of the things that happened in the last couple days was a real plus for college football, and we need to move forward in a positive direction,” Cignetti said in reference to not only Sorsby, but what he called the “gambling issue in general.”

On Monday, Sorsby stated his intentions to enter the NFL’s supplemental draft this summer. This comes just days removed from receiving an injunction from Lubbock County judge Ken Curry that would allow the quarterback to play for Texas Tech in 2026, after serving a two-game penalty.

Sorsby, a top-rated quarterback in the transfer portal this off-season, had enrolled at Texas Tech with plans to be the Red Raiders‘ starting quarterback in 2026. But, back in April, Sorsby entered gambling addiction treatment, as an NCAA investigation began.

The investigation found that Sorsby made dozens of bets on Indiana football during his freshman season with the Hoosiers. The NCAA initially found him ineligible but he was granted an injunction after nearly a month-long lawsuit.

In wake of the ruling, many programs stated they would not add Texas Tech to their schedules. A week later, the same day the Big 12 filed a lawsuit in Texas, Sorsby announced his decision to enter the NFL supplemental draft.

Now, rather than fighting for his collegiate eligibility, Sorsby has opted to start preparing for his professional career.

“I think he’s an outstanding quarterback and a great kid, and I think he’s going to be a great pro,” Cignetti said on Sorsby. “With the proper support to overcome some of the issues he’s had, I think he’s got a lot of talent and there’ll be an NFL that’ll be really happy to have him.”

Cignetti also added he believes college football must unite to “empower” the NCAA, and look to let the governing body enforce rules and regulations, rather then have them settled in court.
