India squad for Ireland T20I tour 2026: Shreyas Iyer named new captain, SKY dropped

This June, India are scheduled to play two T20Is against Ireland in Belfast on June 26 and June 28 as part of the preparations for the next T20 World Cup cycle.

The official India squad for the tour has now been released.

The big news. Shreyas Iyer will succeed Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain after impressive performances in domestic cricket and IPL. Yadav, though, has been dropped from the T20I setup altogether.

“We debated it a lot, not the easiest discussion especially if you’ve won the World Cup. At some stage, we would’ve discussed. Shreyas playing as well as he has made the decision easier,” BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar said, per ESPNCricinfo.

“With regards to Shreyas, we’ve seen what he’s done last few years, leading different franchises. Led a team to the title, his own performances have been good. Was close to being part of the WC squad, in my opinion was a “stand-out candidate.”

“With regards to SKY, it was a tough one. Partly his own form and also looking at next two-year cycle, we thought this was the best way forward. Shreyas is well-deserving,” he added.

Also, one of the most talked-about additions to the Indian squad has been teenage batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, seen as India’s next big thing in cricket and likely to make his senior team debut after an exceptional IPL 2026 season, scoring 776 runs and winning the Orange Cap.

Tilak Varma has also been named as the vice-captain of the side, replacing Axar Patel. Agarkar noted that the decision was made with a long-term view for the upcoming two-year cycle.
