‘I’m excited to be here’ – Stones edging closer to joining Inter

John Stones said he was “excited to be here” after landing in Italy ahead of his move to Serie A champions Inter. 

Stones, who ended his trophy-laden 10-year spell with Manchester City at the end of last season, is expected to sign a two-year contract with Cristian Chivu’s side. 

The 32-year-old had been linked with other clubs in the Premier League, with Arsenal and Chelsea among his potential suitors, but he has now chosen to join Inter. 

During his time at the Etihad Stadium, Stones made 295 appearances across all competitions, winning 17 major honours including six Premier League titles. 

He also helped the Citizens to their maiden Champions League triumph in 2022-23, but struggled with injuries at the end of his time with the club. 

Stones was named in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for this summer’s World Cup and appeared five times during the Three Lions’ run to the semi-finals of the competition. 

And having had time to ponder his future following the conclusion of the tournament, Stones is excited about having a crack at Serie A with Inter. 

“I’m sure I will see you all very soon,” Stones said. “I’m excited to be here.”

Stones would become Inter’s fourth arrival of the summer, following the signings of Ivan Provedel, Aleksandar Stankovic and former City team-mate Manuel Akanji. 

However, the acquisition of the England international may not be the end of Inter’s defensive recruitment ahead of defending the Scudetto in 2026-27.

Piero Ausilio, the club’s sporting director, recently confirmed that discussions are underway to sign Tottenham captain Cristian Romero, with Roberto De Zerbi saying he would not stand in the way of players who wanted to leave the Premier League side. 

In addition to that, Romero’s club team-mate Djed Spence has been linked with a move to Inter following an impressive campaign for England at the World Cup. 

Despite four of his appearances coming as a substitute, Spence attempted (19) and won (11) the second-most tackles for the Three Lions in North America this summer.

He also ranked joint-second among all England players for interceptions (six) and joint-third for successful dribbles (six), and he could be viewed as a replacement for Denzel Dumfries, who departed for Real Madrid earlier in the window. 

Inter also confirmed earlier this week that Yann Bisseck had signed a new five-year deal, ending speculation of a move to Bayern Munich.
