‘I think it’s time to sit him down’: Analyst says Michigan should bench Bryce Underwood
The Michigan Wolverines have struggled mightily on the offensive side of the ball this season. Now, after a second consecutive loss, CBS analyst and longtime coach Rick Neuheisel thinks it’s time to put Underwood on the bench.
Following Saturday’s loss to the Minnesota Gophers, where Underwood threw two interceptions and led the Wolverines to just 7 points on offense, Neuheisel argued that it’s time to make a change.
‘It is not working’
During the CBS Sports postgame show on Saturday afternoon, Neuheisel claimed that Underwood should be benched, claiming that it is just simply “not working.”
“I think it’s time to sit him down. I think if I was involved in that decision, I think I would say it’s best for Bryce. He needs to watch it from the sideline and see if he can grow and learn more about what’s happening on the other side of the ball. And for the football team and the fanbase, I think they need to see a change,” Neuheisel said.
“And for Jason Beck, the new offensive coordinator who came along with Kyle Whittingham, I think it gives him a chance to start building something else. Because right now, it is not working. Square peg, round hole sort of thing.”
‘There’s complications’
Neuheisel did point out that there are “complications” with a potential decision to bench Underwood given the size of his NIL contract coming out of high school. On3 has reported that Underwood’s deal is worth as much as $12.5 million over the course of four years.
However, Neuheisel also points out that Whittingham was not the coach who negotiated that deal.
“There’s complications because of the amount of money that they put into this youngster from the NIL stuff. So there’s a concern, ‘What will the alums think if we’re not using him wisely?'” Neuheisel said. “But that wasn’t Kyle Whittingham’s staff that asked for that. So I just think it would be good. And maybe Bryce Underwood comes off the bench, becomes a hero again, like he’s been in the past, and this could have a happy ending.”
We’ll have to see what happens, but Whittingham certainly didn’t rule out a change after the game.
