‘I drop back, don’t stay in the box’ – Portugal striker explains how he’s different

Portugal attacker, Fábio Silva has said he is not the type of player who stays in the box waiting for the ball.

He said he likes dropping back and believes his style of play can help his teammates on the pitch.

Speaking with journalists ahead of Portugal’s UEFA Nations League game against Wales, Silva said he was delighted to have been selected for the Portugal national team.

He said he possesses proficiency with both feet, adding: “I am very pleased to be here, first and foremost. Regarding the attributes that the coach referenced, I believe I am a forward with distinctly varied capabilities.

“I am not confined or restricted to operating solely within the penalty box; I can withdraw deeper into the field to establish connections and facilitate passes through alternative attacking positions.

“I can receive the ball with either foot or make runs in depth. The nations and clubs throughout my career have equipped me with these competencies, and I am confident that I can contribute multiple dimensions to the game.”

When discussing the prospect of playing alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, he indicated that the legendary status of the 41-year-old does not present any additional difficulty. He described the Al-Nassr star as an idol.

He added: “It is an additional privilege. It is an honour to be present here and to have the opportunity to gain knowledge from him. He represents an idol—an individual who has served as my inspiration since childhood, and I have consistently aspired to experience these opportunities alongside him.

“I endeavour to learn from him to determine how I can perform optimally, and that is my primary focus. His value is universally recognised, and I am honoured to cherish these moments in his company.”

Jorge Jesus has selected Cristiano Ronaldo and Fábio Silva as he assumes his managerial role with the Portugal national team.

The manager was appointed following Roberto Martínez’s departure from the position after Portugal’s elimination from the FIFA World Cup.
