‘I don’t see a fast solution at all’: Urban Meyer calls Michigan ‘a train wreck’
The Michigan Wolverines have lost two back-to-back games, and the team’s offense hasn’t been reliable all year, even in the games that it’s won. It’s gotten so bad in Ann Arbor that three-time national champion head coach Urban Meyer has gone as far as to describe the Michigan offense as a “train wreck.
What’s perhaps most concerning, however, is that Meyer doesn’t see an easy or simple solution to these problems.
Michigan’s Struggles
Saturday’s loss to Minnesota brings Michigan’s record to 3-2 on the season, but things have been a little less optimistic than even the record indicates.
One of Michigan’s wins came in controversial fashion against the Western Michigan Broncos, as the FBS Oversight Committee essentially admitted that Western Michigan should have won the game but stated that the official result cannot be changed. Michigan went on to beat Oklahoma the following week, but that win has lost a lot of its luster with Oklahoma having its own struggles. The only other win came against UTEP, which has lost eight consecutive games to FBS opponents.
So far this season, Michigan has failed to even reach 20 points on offense in every game its played against Power 4 opponents. The only game it scored more than 20 points came against UTEP.
‘A train wreck’
During the most recent episode of The Triple Option, Meyer got pretty candid about Michigan’s situation on offense as he made it clear that he thinks Michigan’s biggest issue is just an overall lack of playmakers.
“I don’t see a fast solution at all because … have not said this yet, It’s a train wreck right now,” Meyer said. “….This is not all on (Bryce Underwood). Unfortunately, he plays that position that is all on him. You know, whenever they win, the quarterback gets too much glory, and when they lose, they get too much blame. But that sideline, I just didn’t feel the dudes anywhere.
“And I was looking. I was staring. You know, plays are going on, and I’m staring because I did that for so long. I’m saying, ‘where are the grown-[expletive] men?’ And I didn’t feel it. I didn’t see it when there had to be a big stop. I didn’t see the, you know, the energy, and you know, I just didn’t see it … Passion, energy, and toughness. I didn’t see it.”
Kyle Whittingham Searches for Answers
The unfortunate problem is that head coach Kyle Whittingham doesn’t have many answers, either.
“I’m still trying to figure it out. I’ve been in this profession 40-plus years, and this is the biggest challenge I’ve had,” Whittingham said after Michigan’s loss to Minnesota. “And we will get it figured out, I promise you that. I’m not sure what the timeline is, but I promise you we’ll get it figured out at some juncture.”
Whittingham has not ruled out the possibility of benching Underwood, but as Meyer said, there’s no guarantee that fixes the issue.
