Huntington scores late to slip past Captain Shreve on senior night

· · 2 min read

Captain Shreve said goodbye to 17 seniors playing their final regular season game at Lee Hedges as the home team Thursday night, but Huntington made sure it was a disappointing finale with a 28-21 win.

After a poor special teams effort by the Gators with about 2 minutes remaining, Huntington quarterback Braylon Washington scored on a 23-yard run for the game-winner. Washington had scored earlier in the fourth quarter on a 3-yard run to knot the game at 21. The game ended with a Gator pass missing in the end zone. Washington finished with 73 yards passing and 27 yards rushing with the two scores.

The win solidified the Raiders’ chances at a postseason berth, while the loss by the Gators severed a two-game winning streak and put doubt on their ability to host a first-round playoff game.

The Raiders (2-6) got on the board late in the first quarter when AJ Johnson cashed in on a 2-yard drive. Shreve’s Gage Lockett answered for the Gators (4-4) with his 5-yard TD run with about 6 minutes to play in the first half. And Shreve took the lead with just 50 seconds remaining in the half when Maddox Parrott found Chris Hill for a 42-yard TD pass down the left sideline.

Huntington answered quickly with a short drive to tie the game at 21 on Washington’s first TD run with under 4 minutes remaining in regulation.

Shreve did post 401 yards of offense with Lockett rushing for 103 yards and two TDs. Parrott passed for 245 yards and one TD with 61 more rushing yards.
