How young is the average age of Texas football’s roster?

One of the points raised about Texas football‘s roster throughout the current offseason has been the average age of the program’s roster heading into the 2026 college football season. In fact, as noted by multiple outlets, Texas has the fourth-youngest roster across the entire sport at an average roster age of 19.86 years old. In other words, roughly the age of a second-year sophomore.

Most of the discussion around average roster age goes back to a recent RotoWire report.

Here’s an excerpt from how RotoWire broke it down at the time:

“Across all 138 FBS programs, the average roster checks in at just over 20.3 years old — but the gap between the oldest and youngest teams is wider than a full calendar year, and it says a great deal about how each program is built. At the top sits UTSA, whose roster averages 21.02 years old — the oldest in the country. At the other end … the youngest roster in the sport at 19.81. Neither is an accident. In the transfer-portal era, veteran-heavy rosters and blue-chip youth movements are two different blueprints for winning — and the numbers below show exactly who is leaning which way.”

Clearly, it’s not even a big deal by most measures of the game.

At least those that matter most—wins and losses.

Georgia football, for example, has the game’s current youngest average age roster.

Georgia has also played in consecutive College Football Playoff quarterfinals.
