The Vegas Golden Knights come off a Stanley Cup Final run with another new coach and a leaner roster as they host the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday night as the NHL opens the 2026-27 season.

Vegas played in its third Stanley Cup Final in its ninth season of existence last season after a stunning coaching change saw Bruce Cassidy kicked to the curb in favor of John Tortorella with eight games left. After losing to the Carolina Hurricanes, the Golden Knights moved on quickly from Torts to promote organization veteran Ryan Craig, an assistant for six seasons before coaching the team’s AHL affiliate the last three. Pavel Dorofeyev, who scored a team-high 37 goals during the regular season and 12 more in the playoffs, was dealt to the New York Rangers and the team also moved on from fan-favorite Keegan Kolesar to get under the salary cap.

The rebuilding Blackhawks look to take a step forward after four straight last-place runs in the Central Division but won’t have newly minted captain Connor Bedard until at least November as he recovers from a shoulder injury. Chicago bolstered the blue line, acquiring right-side defenseman Bowen Byram from the Buffalo Sabres, but the big splash of the offseason was the return of franchise icon Patrick Kane, who scored 446 goals and won three Stanley Cups in his first run in Chicago from 2007-23. Kane, who turns 38 in November, had 16 goals and 57 points in 67 games with the Detroit Red Wings last season.

The Golden Knights enter their 10th season with eight playoff appearances already and won the Stanley Cup in 2023. Chicago last reached the playoffs in the expanded postseason in 2020.
