How four-star WR Dontay Tyson's commitment affects Washington football

The Washington Huskies earned their fourth wide receiver commitment of 2027 on Friday when Peoria (Ariz.) standout Dontay Tyson announced his pledge to Jedd Fisch’s coaching staff over the Texas A&M Aggies.

Tyson, the No. 325 player and No. 42 wide receiver in the class per the 247Sports Composite, is Washington’s 17th commitment and eighth blue-chip commitment of the cycle. Four of the huskies/3470/">Huskies‘ top six recruits in 2027 are now foundational pieces of the offense: quarterback Blake Roskopf, receiver Tre Moore, receiver Braylon Pope, and Tyson. The other two are both defensive tackles: Tevita Nonu of local O’Dea and Jon Ioane of Tustin (Calif.).

Fisch and wide receivers coach Kevin Cummings have now gotten commitments from 13 wide receivers since their first full class on Montlake in 2025. But how does Tyson fit in to what’s quickly becoming a crowded group?

Let’s start here: ten of Washington’s eleven scholarship receivers on this year’s roster have remaining eligibility in 2027. Only Kennesaw State transfer Christian Moss is guaranteed to graduate, and all but Moss and redshirt junior Rashid Williams are redshirt sophomores or younger. Sophomore Dezmen Roebuck is expected to be the team’s top receiver this season and will presumably return as such in 2027 as a junior, barring a massive NIL check elsewhere. Sophomore Chris Lawson and freshman Jordan Clay have been in the mix with Moss as the starting X, and both should play a decent amount this year.

Freshman Mason James will back up Roebuck in the slot, freshman Trez Davis can work at all three positions, and redshirt freshman Bodpegn Miller has tantalizing traits at the X but missed most of the spring with an injury after transferring in from Ohio State. Redshirt sophomore Justice Williams and redshirt freshman Deji Ajose are the furthest away from playing time, but even then, both had their moments this spring.

Add Moore, Pope, Tyson, and three-star Desert Edge (Ariz.) recruit Zerek Sidney – a high school teammate of Roskopf’s – and there will be a tenacious battle for playing time next spring. Even if you assume Justice Williams and Ajose transfer in search of greener pastures, the Huskies would have eight receivers returning and four more coming in, all of whom are on the cusp of productivity. That could result in some tough decisions this offseason, like letting Rashid Williams cash in elsewhere for his senior season or one of Clay, Davis, James, or Miller deciding to search for playing time at another school.

Such is a testament to the job Cummings has done luring talent to Montlake that the arrival of the 2027 group may inherently push out older, more experienced players. Moore chose Washington over Miami and Ohio State, while Tyson picked the Huskies on Friday over Texas A&M. While Moore and Pope both stand at a reported 6-foot-3 and may shake up the depth chart at X, Tyson could play any of the three receiver spots thanks to his 6-foot-1, 190-pound frame. He qualified for the Arizona state track meet in the 100 and 200 meters as a freshman and has experience taking handoffs (29 in his high school career to date) from his receiver spot.

Tyson told 247Sports on May 28 that playing early was important to him, but that “the most important thing is getting developed.” Washington’s staff has shown the ability to do both: they burned redshirts for Roebuck, Lawson, and since-transferred Raiden Vines-Bright in 2025, and Audric Harris in 2024, while developing Roebuck into a standout starter and the first Husky freshman to record a 100-yard performance since 2017 despite his three-star recruiting pedigree.

Go back further, and Cummings’ track record of producing receivers becomes even clearer. At Arizona, Cummings mentored future first-round NFL draft pick Tetairoa McMillan and led Jacob Cowing and Dorian Singer to more than 1,000 yards, the first time that two Arizona receivers went over that mark in the same season in program history. Bailey Gaither earned All-Mountain West first team honors at San Jose State under Cummings’ tutelage during his first stop as a wide receivers coach as well.

Fast forward a few years, and a theoretical offense of Roskopf, Moore, Pope, and Tyson in 2029 could easily be one of the most high-powered groups in the country. Washington has plenty more to fill out in the meantime, but if they can hang on to those four until they reach their true junior seasons, the Huskies should be incredibly dangerous in what would be Fisch’s sixth season at the helm.
