Houston Texans Wide Receiver Room Update

The Houston Texans took a massive hit at wide receiver last week when promising second-year wide receiver Jayden Higgins suffered a season-ending torn ACL.

General manager Nick Caserio responded quickly, adding veteran wide receivers Zay Jones and Sterling Shepard. While both additions provided much-needed depth at training camp, it still felt like Houston needed another legitimate weapon to stabilize the position heading into the 2026 season.

The Texans began calling around the league and gauging the asking prices for several wide receivers before ultimately pulling the trigger Monday, acquiring Kayshon Boutte from the New England Patriots.

Houston sent safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round pick to New England in exchange for the 24-year-old receiver.

Boutte became one of Drake Maye’s most dangerous downfield weapons in New England. Last season, he finished with 33 receptions for 551 yards and six touchdowns while averaging 16.7 yards per reception. He also played a role in the Patriots’ run to the Super Bowl, including a touchdown against Houston in the Divisional Round.

Now, the former LSU standout gets an opportunity to step into a significant role in Houston during the final year of his rookie contract. A strong 2026 season could also put Boutte in position to cash in when he becomes a free agent next offseason.

More importantly, he gives the Texans something they desperately need.

Houston’s offense was far too one-dimensional last season and consistently struggled to create explosive plays. Higgins was expected to take another step forward and help change that in 2026, making his season-ending injury such a significant loss.

Boutte isn’t a one-for-one replacement for Higgins, but his ability to stretch the field gives C.J. Stroud another legitimate weapon and adds a different dimension to the offense.

Everyone knows Houston’s defense is good enough to carry this team deep into the season. But if the Texans want to finally break through and make a legitimate Super Bowl run, they need more from their offense.

Adding Boutte gives them another opportunity to find it.

There are still plenty of questions surrounding the group, especially when it comes to health and availability. Dell is working his way back from a significant knee injury, while Noel has also dealt with injuries during training camp.

But if Houston can get this group healthy and keep it that way, there is plenty of talent for Stroud to work with.

Losing Higgins was a massive blow.

Adding Boutte doesn’t completely erase it, but it gives the Texans another explosive weapon — and some much-needed hope that this offense can reach another level in 2026.
