Houston Astros outfielder Jake Meyers out for season after suffering knee injury at Triple-A

· · 1 min read

Jake Meyers, the Houston Astros‘ opening-day center fielder, will miss the rest of the season after fouling a ball off his knee at Triple-A Sugar Land last week, manager Joe Espada said.

Meyers last played for Sugar Land on Sept. 11 and was placed on the 7-day minor-league injured list the next day. Espada did not have an exact diagnosis of Meyers’ injury but said Meyers fouled a pitch off his left kneecap area and is wearing a brace. Meyers’ injury was first reported by MLB.com.

The injury removes Meyers from the Astros’ outfield depth options, though he had already fallen in that hierarchy. Meyers posted a .580 OPS in 52 games this season before Houston optioned him to Triple-A in early July. He was recalled for two brief stints after that, appearing in five more games.

Meyers played in at least 100 games with the Astros each of the past three seasons. He was a Gold Glove finalist in center field in 2024 but owns a career .671 OPS in the majors. After batting a career-high .292 last year, he hit .213 with Houston this season. He had a .639 OPS in 35 games at Triple-A.

The Astros recalled Meyers when rosters expanded on Sept. 1 but subsequently sent him back to Triple-A when they claimed outfielder Jorge Barrosa off waivers. Barrosa was designated for assignment Saturday, when the Astros reinstated utility player Brice Matthews from the injured list.
