HMRC opened tax probe into Manchester City in 2018
HMRC opened an investigation into Manchester City’s tax arrangements in 2018, according to a report from The Financial Times.
Currently at the heart of what has become both an infamous saga and a stain on the English football, The Financial Times are reporting that the UK tax authorities probed the Premier League giants almost a decade ago.
HM Revenue & Customs allegedly opened a civil investigation into Man City’s tax affairs following the release of leaked internal emails by Dutch outlet Der Spiegel back in 2018.
The HMRC’s investigation was to asses whether the City hierarchy had used complex arrangements to underpay tax almost 10 years prior to being found guilty of breaching almost the entirety of the Premier League’s financial rules.
The FT’s report also suggested that HMRC’s initial probe promoted the Premier League to launch their own investigation, which was launched in December of that year.
While Manchester City might sternly protest their innocence, an independent commission found the eight-time Premier League champions guilty of artificially inflating their account by more than £900million between 2009 and 2018.
Allegedly arranging “sham” contracts and now in the midst of what has become one of the most infamous and damaging scandals in Premier League history, City were found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges placed against them.
Sky Sports also reported this week that UEFA are closely monitoring the situation and will wait until the Premier League’s disciplinary process is completed before they reignite their own respective war with the Man City hierarchy.
