High school football top 10: Serra clinches at least a tie for WCAL title
At Serra, the nine Central Coast Section titles are greatly appreciated as are the three straight appearances in state Open Division games starting in 2021. And the Padres’ fans can’t forget the program’s lone state crown in 2017.
But when it comes to true championships, Serra covets West Catholic Athletic League banners and it sewed up another on Saturday with a 49-14 triumph at defending champion Riordan.
The Crusaders (6-3, 5-1) played without UNLV-bound running back Adonyae Brown (ankle), but even the rugged senior surely could not have prevented the Padres from clinching at least a tie for coach Patrick Walsh’s 10th WCAL crown since taking over in 2001. Serra clinch the outright title Saturday with a win at home over St. Francis (3-6, 2-4). Serra won just one WCAL crown before Walsh arrived in 2001.
Serra had lost three straight to Riordan, but the Padres raced to a 35-0 lead early in the second quarter, starting with a 75-yard pick-6 from Oregon-bound Malakai Taufoou, who later added a spectacular diving 15-yard TD catch. The Padres put an exclamation point on the win when Kapono Keanaaina (12 rushes, 101 yards) sprinted into the end zone from 55 yards out as the Padres improved to 8-1 and 6-0 in WCAL play.
The brother-to-brother combination of quarterback Jax Cannon (12 of 20, 205 yards, two TDs) to USC-bound tight end Jace Cannon (4 catches, 100 yards) was also effective for the Padres, who piled up 406 yards, almost evenly in the air and ground.
Walsh, the program’s winningest coach with 218 victories, was overjoyed. “We don’t talk about winning as much as service and relationships,” he said. “But when we do, it’s about winning WCAL championships. … It’s a historic league and long after these kids graduate they will be sitting in an establishment in the Bay Area talking about WCAL memories. It’s always satisfying to hang a WCAL banner.
“That said, we’ve suffered some miserable days against St. Francis, so we take nothing for granted. We need to be present and in the moment.”
The Padres are ranked No. 12 in the state by Sports Illustrated, and suffered their lone loss in their season opener against De La Salle-Concord. But Serra lost three offensive linemen to injury before that defeat by the now-No. 3 team in the state ranked No. 1 in the Bay Area by the Chronicle. Now, with those lineman healthy, the Padres look unbeatable heading into CCS playoff action in two weeks.
