MIAMI – With Heat’s Giannis Antetokounmpo gets 100% realMiami Heat star Giannis Antetokounmpo making his preseason debut with the team in Saturday’s 129=-105 win over the Toronto Raptors, the basketball world got a glimpse of how the two-time MVP fits with his new team. After the impressive debut, Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra compared Antetokounmpo to legendary point guard Magic Johnson, garnering the attention of the superstar.
Antetokounmpo would record 14 minutes in Saturday’s win, recording nine points on three of four shooting from the field to go along with seven assists and four rebounds.

The way the 31-year-old initiated and created a lot of offensive opportunities for his teammates stood out to Spoelstra, who said after the win that Antetokounmpo’s passing ability reminds him of Johnson, who won four titles with Miami president Pat Riley.

Antetokounmpo is no doubt flattered by the comment, admitting he is “far away” from the likes of Johnson, though he has received the comparison before other coaches in his 13 seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks.
“It’s a great compliment. I think I’m far away from Magic Johnson, if not the best point guard to ever play this game,” Antetokounmpo said Monday. “But it’s always fun to me. I think every coach that I’ve been around, they always say the same thing…Like, ‘Oh, actually, I didn’t know that Giannis could pass the ball.’ I’ve had J-Kidd [Jason Kidd] say that in the past. Coach Bud [Mike Budenholzer], Doc Rivers, now Coach Spo [Spoelstra]. So for me, I take pride in making plays for myself and for my teammates.”
“It’s almost like I get like little dopamine hits when I’m able to get in the lane and find the open guy for a three or for an easy two,” Antetokounmpo continued. “I’ve always enjoyed that, and now I have the opportunity within our offense that it’s kind of easy. The spacing is easy. Everybody’s moving. I think it’s kind of easier for me to find those guys. I’m looking forward for guys making shots, being open, and me trying to deliver the ball as well as I can.”

Giannis Antetokounmpo sees improvement in Heat’s chemistry
Though it’s the first preseason game for the Heat, the team’s offense showed exactly how high-powered and fast-paced it can be, with the team scoring 76 points in the first half. Antetokounmpo was a major part of the success, calling the debut a “fun” romp.
“I think as a team, first game, obviously we played a lot against each other. It was nice just playing against somebody else,” Antetokounmpo said. “I think the bench did a very good job, just playing fast, move the ball, be physical, score 42 points. You know, we got to continue as a team to be able to put pressure on defenses. It was nice. Just was fun.”
The starting lineup on Saturday was the one that many had projected when the roster was finalized for the most part, as Antetokounmpo headlined it with Bam Adebayo, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, and Davion Mitchell. As the lineup continues to work out its kinks, Antetokounmpo said after Monday’s practice that the goal is to be “efficient with one another.”
“Yeah, we’ve played enough. Played enough. Obviously, practiced four or five times. Played one game,” Antetokounmpo said. “We continue to build that chemistry, find ways to be efficient with one another. But the most important thing is going to be spacing. A lot of people that can make plays. You know, Davion can get the rebound, make a play. Same with Bam, same with myself. Just got to figure out a way to not get in each other’s way. Just as I said, be efficient with one another.’
“It’s gonna come, it’s Game one, and not to be hard on ourselves,” Antetokounmpo continued. “Like I feel like it was pretty good for game one, but we can always do better, get better, and look forward to the future.”

At any rate, Antetokounmpo and Miami continue to build chemistry with the Red, White, and Pink scrimmage on Tuesday and the home preseason opener on Thursday against the New Orleans Pelicans.
