Guy Ritchie Tried To Started A Shared Universe With His King Arthur Movie

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword was released in theaters on May 12, 2017. Charlie Hunnam gives life to the famous title character, with Ritchie’s fantasy epic serving as King Arthur’s origin story. Ritchie saw the movie as the first step of a full-on universe, as the director had planned the King Arthur franchise to include six movies.

However, the ambitious plan was scrapped when King Arthur: Legend of the Sword became a major box office bomb. The fantasy epic had a reported budget of $175 million. As such, it needed to finish its global run between $350 million and $437.5 million just to break even, which was no small task. Given how the movie only amassed $149.2 million worldwide, the studios lost over $150 million on the project, killing the sequels.
